Contains information pertaining to the following wars and time period: 1812, Early Indian, Civil War, Spanish American. Contains information pertaining to the following military units: 8th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment; 28th U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment. General description of the collection: Smith-Kirby-Webster-Black-Danner family papers include 23 letters from Confederate officer Edmund Kirby-Smith to his relatives (1848-August 2, 1865). Nine of these letters were written during the secession crisis and during the Civil War. There are also newspaper articles about him written at his death (March 28, 1893). A genealogy of the Smith family and the Lee family written in 1855 which traces the family history from the 16th to mid 19th centuries is included. Correspondence is found by Joseph Lee Smith, Joseph Smith and Ephraim Kirby who served in the early American wars of the War of 1812 and the American Revolution. There are also some letters from the Danners, principally James Danner which pertain to his military service with the 8th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment during the Spanish-American War and with the 28th U.S. Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the Philippine Insurrection. Many relate to his death while on duty at Balayan, Luzon on September 27th, 1900.
